18th April 2022Nelson Mandela Month: Legacy Matters
2nd July 2022One to One Africa’s ENABLE program focuses on delivering essential healthcare services to vulnerable communities, specifically by promoting quality maternal and child care. The program’s impact includes a significant reduction in mother-to-child HIV transmission, the full immunization of children under six, and the rehabilitation of malnourished children.
The organization achieves its objectives through Mentor Mothers who identify at-risk mothers and children and offer them relevant and compassionate assistance in a comfortable and safe setting.

– Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
One To One Africa is committed to enabling 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 through delivering vital HIV, nutrition, and childcare initiatives to last-mile communities within the Eastern Cape.
Last mile communities are the communities out of reach of tar roads, and therefore, beyond the aid of other NGOs or government support. Mandela’s own home district falls into this category, with the OR Tambo District being the headquarters for our ENABLE programme.
Because early childhood health and development form the bedrock of cognitive, physical, and psycho-social growth moving into adulthood, the quality of care within these early years significantly influences the potential of each child’s adult life.
Our ENABLE programme focuses on promoting quality maternal and child care as a cornerstone for positive early childhood development.
To date, the impact of this programme includes (but is not limited to):
– Reduction of mother-to-child HIV transmission from ~30%, to 0.03%
– Ensuring 99.6% of vulnerable children are actively linked to social grants
– Full immunization of 94% of children under 6 (compared to the national rate of 83.5% and 76% in the Eastern Cape province)
– 42% of mothers are exclusively breastfeeding (compared to the national average of 32%)
– 71% of malnourished children were supported and rehabilitated back to full health
– 3 400 children are currently supported by our monthly nutrition packs
– 1 517 children are currently supported by our micronutrient supplements
Going from home to home, our Mentor Mothers identify at-risk mothers and children as early as possible, ensuring they receive the necessary care and support in a comfortable and safe setting. Being from these remote villages themselves, our Mentor Mothers are uniquely qualified to offer relevant and compassionate assistance to mothers and children in need.
Nomsa Marutha, currently managing the Community Health Workers of the Enable programme, says that she prefers outreach work in a clinic as she is: “𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘋𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩”.
Nelson Mandela himself endorsed to work we at One to One Africa are committed to doing. Our founder, David Altschuler, says this about Mandela’s comments: “When we had tea with Madiba at his office in Johannesburg in 2007, he encouraged us to continue and grow our work.”
Your support and donations ensure we can keep doing this work and continue to change lives, one mother at a time.
