MANDELA DAY REFRAMED –
With the launch of One to One’s Mandela Month Business
Alliance Initiative
Nelson Mandela inspired action. Become part of Nelson Mandela’s home-grown legacy.
“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.”
– Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela
Introduction
Mandela Day provides a unique opportunity for sectors to unite in creating value that reflects Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy. Value-shared collaborations between companies and NGOs can align missions and bring real community benefits. As a leader in last-mile healthcare, One to One Africa advocates harnessing and leveraging the potential provided by Mandela Day, through our inaugural Mandela Month Business Alliance Initiative Programme.
How does the programme work?
Businesses often believe their contribution to development is limited to cash donations or CSR interventions, which are helpful but are not the only options available to them. We argue that a well-crafted collaboration can equally benefit both organisations and positively impact the community too. How?
- Resource Pooling: Both Companies and NGOs have access to financial resources, skilled personnel, and networks that can significantly amplify the impact of NGO initiatives. By collaborating, they can pool resources to create a more substantial and sustainable community change, while still offering all parties value.
- Increased Reach: Both Companies and NGOs can help each other extend their reach by leveraging their marketing and communication channels to raise awareness about the causes they support. This broader reach attracts more volunteers, donations, public support, and public awareness.
Long-term benefits for the Company Partner include:
- Improve Brand Image: Collaborations can generate shared value, benefiting both the business and the community. Companies cultivate a stronger, more positive brand image and a motivated workforce, while NGOs receive the necessary support to further their missions.
- Secure New Innovations: Collaboration can lead to new and innovative solutions to social issues, combining the strengths and creativity of both sectors. This can result in scalable and replicable models that benefit a broader audience and may foster a new product or service that may directly benefit the company’s bottom line.
- Stabilise Local Operating Environment: NGOs often possess deep insights into the specific needs and challenges of local communities. Collaborative efforts can lead to more impactful solutions that are both relevant and sustainable for the communities served.
- Build Brand Reputation: Active involvement in community service enhances a company’s reputation, demonstrating its commitment to social responsibility and ethical practices. This positive public perception can increase customer loyalty, differentiate the brand, and improve its market position.
- Boost Employee Engagement and Morale: Participating in meaningful community service projects can boost employee morale, satisfaction, and loyalty. Employees often feel proud to work for companies that prioritize social good, leading to higher levels of engagement and productivity.
